When Burnout Becomes a Wake-Up Call: My Story of Falling Asleep at the Wheel

Over a decade ago, burnout nearly took my life.

I was commuting between cities, working nonstop, running on empty. I told myself I was strong. Capable. Responsible. Needed.

Then one night, after another long day, I fell asleep while driving home on a major highway.

I woke up to my car rolling.

In that split second, I thought, this is it.

That moment was not just a physical wake-up call. It was a spiritual one.

The Hidden Signs of Burnout

Burnout rarely announces itself loudly at first. It disguises itself as:

• Responsibility

• Dedication

• Being the reliable one

• Serving everyone else first

But underneath, there are warning signs:

• Constant exhaustion no amount of sleep fixes

• Emotional numbness

• Irritability and brain fog

• Disconnection from joy

• Quiet resentment

• Spiritual dryness

I had normalized all of it.

Burnout Is Not Just Stress

Burnout is not just being tired.

It is chronic depletion of your physical, emotional, and spiritual reserves. It happens when you continuously override your limits in the name of productivity, performance, or pleasing others.

For me, it cost me peace. Presence. Connection with God. Connection with myself.

Rebuilding After Burnout

Healing did not start with productivity hacks. It started with surrender.

I rebuilt my life with:

• Faith-based rhythms

• Clear, sacred boundaries

• Slower, intentional pacing

• Honest conversations

• Daily practices that restored my nervous system

Burnout was not the end of my story. It was the beginning of alignment.

If you feel like you are silently drowning while still showing up for everyone else, you are not weak. You are likely exhausted.

And exhaustion is not your identity.
